Delight, the verb…

Delight, the verb…

I have to say it again I love the word delight. It is not a noun rather a verb, an action, meaning God is doing this right now. He is taking delight in you and I, right in this very moment. So say the word again. As the corners of your mouth curl up in a smile feel the Father’s gaze at you, knowing he is delighting in you.

Delight in the originally biblical language is often described as, taking joy or pleasure in something or someone. It means to love, to be pleased. When tiny voices cry out “mommy” as their feet pitter-patter down the steps in the morning, I feel joy. When some young women surprise me at my door with fresh baked cookies just to hang out because they missed me, I feel loved. When my husband brings me flowers or speaks of his gratefulness for me, I feel delighted in.

Throughout scripture God has delighted in His people and Jesus Christ. One of my favorite moments in all of scripture is when the heavens open as Jesus is baptized. The Holy Spirit descends in physical form as likened to the shape of a dove. A voice comes from the heavens and proclaims to Jesus, “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” (Luke 3:22) What a picture of God’s delight in his son, proclaimed for all to see. We might think that Jesus didn’t need to feel the Father’s delight in him, but I’m guessing he did just like we need to.

A transforming picture of God’s delight in you is found in a short book, only 3 chapters long. This almost obscure book in the Old Testament holds a treasure worth uncovering and an often missing perspective when we think about God.

The Lord your God is with you,

He is mighty to save.

He will take great delight in you,

He will quiet you with his love,

He will rejoice over you with singing.

Zephaniah 3:17

Pause… breath… and read again. Let it sink in.

God’s presence is with you.

He fights for you.

He takes delights in you.

His love will quiet the storms in your heart.

And as his daughter, he rejoices over you.

Delight is active, moving, and it changes the heart of the delight-reciever as well as the delight-giver. So today as you take delight in a friend, the fall colors(at least in the midwest), or a favorite activity, pause and realize how you feel about your delight, is how God is feeling about you. Right in that moment, his treasured creation.

My dear, sweet friend, I am so very proud of you. Significantly more important, God is proud of you. I cannot wait to see all that God does in you and through you as you keep dreaming the dreams God has placed in your heart. Thank you for being such an encouragement to each life you touch, including mine. Great job, my friend! That smile you were talking about? I hope you feel His, beaming at you right now!
