Delight that Calms the Deep

Delight that Calms the Deep

Birds chirping. A child sleeping. The massage room. A placid lake. These are all very calming images. However they don’t last very long. The bird flies away. The child wakes to cry “Mommy”. The massage ends and you have to drive home in traffic. A breeze blows by and the lake becomes tumultuous.

Our scripture however paints a different picture of God’s love. His delight, however, can calm your anxious storms. “He will quiet you with his love.” (Zephaniah 3:17) Because God delights in you rather an experience or accomplishment, even in the midst of hardship you can enjoy his delight. His delight is found in his abiding presence that quiets the turmoil in your soul.

The New Living Translation interprets this verse “with his love, he will calm all your fears.” I love that. He will calm, all your fears.

I’m not sure about you but when I get fearful or anxious about something, my fear and my anxiety can take over my entire body. I can get gripped with fear, even paralyzed. It is as if my mind and body get taken over by fear. It takes on a life of its own. I can’t sleep or think about anything else. At its worst, it feels like I am chained to my fear.

What I love about this passage is that it portrays a gentle and tender side of God while at the same time exhibiting his power. His power to quiet our fears.  One by one he releases us from the handcuffs of anxiety and takes off our blindfold to reveal the truth. He grabs us by the hand, helps us up, and leads us out of the darkness into the light of his peace.

This passage promises that He can and will quiet us with his love. He will silence all our fears and tenderly calm our anxious hearts. God’s love originates from his being. It is apart of him. “The silence shows a love deeply felt. It means someone is absorbed in his thoughtfulness over that which they love – like infatuation,” records a commentary by Kiel.

He is absorbed in thoughts of you. His profound love will calm the stormy seas of your days and silence any anxiety as you sleep.  Maybe right now you desperately need to know that God will quiet and calm you with his love.

If that is you, just ask him.

Father, please quiet my mind with your thought-filled love, please calm my fears with your tenderness, please awaken peace within me by your Holy Spirit. Dad, may your deep longing for me flood the recesses of my soul. Help me to claim the truth of your peace over my feelings. I lay my concerns and anxieties before you. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
