A New Year, A New Reality

A New Year, A New Reality

I got scammed. Over the holidays, I knew the deal sounded too good to be true. But I was so hopeful it would be the hidden secret to my victory that I clung to my wishful hope rather than listen to common sense screaming loudly in my soul.

I fell prey to empty hope and washed up promises. I felt so stupid and I couldn’t help feeling a sense of defeat as a New Year was about to dawn.

New Year’s day I sat down to open up the pages of a new Women’s Large Group Study, Gideon by Priscilla Shirer. In the moments that followed, I was re-envisioned for the New Year, refreshed in my spirit, and restored as a Daughter of the King. As I dove into this new study (The story of Gideon is found in Judges chapters 6-8), one of the days particularly resonated with me.

Yahweh’s view was not bound by Gideon’s reality or actions. Gideon may have been under the shadow of Midian [The people oppressing the Israelites], but Yahweh was not. He sees beyond the exterior, calling out of Gideon something that the timid man probably didn’t even realize was in him. Gideon wasn’t a scared farmer. Not really. That’s how he was behaving, but that’s not who he was.

-Priscilla Shirer

I was filled with hope knowing that God doesn’t see me through the lense of my defeats and deficiencies. Rather he sees what he placed within me and is calling it out of me this year. Had I not dove into Truth, I would’ve started this new year living out of my limited perspective and lacking power.

God’s Word  transformed the outcome of this year for me. And I can’t wait to start this journey with you. Start out 2014 discovering what God has placed within you! Join a Small or Large Group Bible Study, attend a Christian Conference, choose a Bible Reading Plan on biblegateway.com, ensure you are regularly attending a Church. Above all, let’s ensure we are diving into God’s Word with others to support us on our journey.

I dont know about you but I want to live 2014  out of God’s empowered reality rather than my already exhausted efforts and I am praying 2014 is marked by God’s victory for each of us. Happy New Year (oops – a couple weeks late)!

About Erin Nicole Thompson

Erin Nicole Thompson is a fun-loving and authentic momma to 4 littles, wife of a ruggedly handsome Pastor, and as she likes to think, the CEO of her home operations. She delights in worship, cooking with good music, the sweet faces of her sleeping children, adult conversations, and some quiet time at Starbucks. She loves to serve alongside, encourage, and equip young and seasoned women. Erin is grateful to be part of what God is doing at The Chapel, a multi-campus church in Northern Chicago-land where her husband, Dave, pastors the Lake Zurich Campus. Presently, she lives to dream and follow God as he writes her story.
