What do you Say to your Son?

My hubby and my oldest are off on a “man trip,” off-roading in Moab, Utah. I felt like this was a significant time in Cole’s life and I wanted to speak words of life. But what do you say to a son who is becoming a man? What do you say to a son that will Dad more and you less? What do you say to a son who will listen to the world rather than being your world? Here's where I'd started…

What do you say to a son who is becoming a man? What do you say to a son that will need Dad more and you less? What do you say to a son who will listen to the world rather than you being his world?

Well, Cole, I’m not sure where to start, but here are a few thoughts based on a pretty famous baptism in Luke 3.

You are MY son.

You have been and will always be my son. A little being that came into this world and made us into a family. Who first showed me what unconditional love looked like. What it felt like. You were a little light that shone brighter than the sun because now we had a son.

Whom I love.

Cole, “love” can get talked about very tritely. But when I say I love you it means I would die for you. That like Jesus, I would sacrifice my life so you can have a better life. I pray that I love you as high and wide and long and deep as God loves you. First, I want you to know his love. But second, I want you to always know my love for you.

With you, Cole, I am pleased.

Cole, have you looked back and celebrated the accomplishments you have made? Our first move, you made new and dear friends. Some whom you keep in touch with. This move, you have adjusted to a new church, new school, and new friends. I am SOO very, very proud of you. I am proud of the young man you are and the man you are becoming.  I hope you know how special you are and how your very life brightens the lives of those around you.

I pray that you enjoy this trip with your Dad. I hope you get a better sense of the Father God’s voice and the voice of your earthly Father. Your Dad, he is a wise and tender man, someone you should aspire to be. Learn from him. Be led by him. Listen to him. And cultivate your own faith in the Father God. This is your life. Ask yourself do you want to be loved like no other? Know forgiveness like no other? Have wisdom like no other? Know strength like no other? Have resiliency like no other? If your answer to any of these questions is “yes,” continue on your path of discovering the Father God’s heart and voice. You won’t regret it, trust me.

Cole David, I love and respect you so.

Your Mom, E
